Theme Comparison

Summit vs a Free Shopify Theme for Wholesale

Summit vs a Free Shopify Theme for Wholesale

Summit and a free Shopify theme can both display products. They do not both finish a wholesale order. This comparison is for merchants in the United States and Europe who are choosing a home for a B2B catalog. On devdiy.com we use one sheet: what the buyer must do, what you will pay in apps to imitate the missing pieces, and who edits the store after launch. Brand names on the homepage are not on the sheet. Summit is the DEVDIY theme built for company purchasing. A free theme is a reasonable prototype. They are not interchangeable once prices differ by customer.

You do not need a feature matrix with forty rows. You need the rows that change cost. The rest is taste, and taste can wait until an order goes through.

Where a free theme is enough

Choose the free theme if every visitor may see the same price, if serious buyers already negotiate in email, and if the catalog is small enough to manage by hand. A private showroom for invited accounts can live on a free theme for a season, especially if you will throw the prototype away. In that case the license you save is real, and Summit would be unused capacity. Write an end date. A prototype without an end date becomes the store, and then you pay the setup cost twice.

Also choose the free theme if you are still deciding whether wholesale is a business or a favor for two friends. Do not buy a wholesale system for a hypothesis. Publish ten products, take the conversations, and decide. The theme is not the experiment. The offer is.

Where Summit pays for itself

Choose Summit when a buyer must be approved, when price or minimum quantity changes by company, or when a quote should be tied to a product instead of a contact form. Those are the jobs free themes hand to apps and to freelancers. Add the app fees and the hours to the free theme’s cost before you call it free. In our experience the hours show up the first time someone asks for a different price on the same SKU. The page and the PDF diverge, and sales stops trusting the site.

Summit keeps price, account state, and the quote path in the product template. You still have to configure them. Configuration is an afternoon of test companies. Custom code on a free theme is a project. If your team does not have a developer on call, that difference is the whole comparison. An editable theme beats a cheaper theme nobody can change on a Monday.

A fair test you can run this week

Install both as unpublished themes if you already have the catalog in Shopify. If you do not, use twenty real products, not demo products. Create a guest session and a company session. On each theme, try to see a contract price only when logged in, block a quantity under the minimum, and send a quote that leaves a record. Time the work. Include the time to install any app the free theme required. The theme that finishes the three tasks with fewer side systems is the one you should publish.

Then look at the storefront as a new buyer from an ad. Filters should include something a purchaser searches, such as pack size or lead time, not only color. Policy links should be present. The page should make sense on a phone, because buyers are not always at a desk. If Summit wins the tasks and the free theme wins only the license line, publish Summit. If the free theme finishes the tasks because your business does not need them, stay free and decline the upsell.

Migration cost if you choose wrong

Moving from a free theme to Summit later is possible and annoying. Handles can stay. Custom sections may not. Apps you added to fake wholesale pricing have to be removed carefully so they do not override Summit. Budget that removal if you know you will need company prices within the year. Starting on Summit is cheaper than starting free when the requirement is already on the whiteboard. Starting free is cheaper when the requirement is a guess.

Content you write, product specs, and photography move either way. Brand language is not locked to the theme. What gets locked is code. Avoid code you do not need. DEVDIY updates Summit as a theme you can rehearse on a copy. A free theme full of patches often cannot take an update without a developer. Put that on the three-year line of the sheet, not only on the launch line.

The decision

If the order is the same for everyone, use the free theme and spend the money on photos and on the product page. If the order depends on the company, use Summit and spend the money on a clean catalog and a tested approval path. Do not sit in the middle, on a free theme wearing a wholesale label, once ads are sending new companies to the site. That middle is where prices leak and quotes vanish.

devdiy.com will not pretend every merchant needs Summit. We will insist that the theme match the order you already take. Run the three-task test. Keep the sheet. Publish the theme that finished the order, and keep the other one unpublished until you are sure you do not need the rollback.
